Emily Gunthorpe 'Living in litter' detailLiving in litter is the reality for so many people in India. People collect rubbish and then re-use rubbish. Creating an aesthetic beauty within the litter was my aim. Decorating one’s home in India not only brings beauty but can ward off bad spirits. This is a strong tradition that is all but lost in poor communities and slums. Can litter be used in an aesthetically inspiring way? Inspired by traditional hand embroidered quilts, these multi-purpose quilted-tarps made from everyday littered shopping bags and simple hand techniques could not only provide shelter, seating and bedding, but clean up the local streets and provide income.
