“I made the porcelain elements of these pieces before leaving Australia for an Asialink Residency at the beginning of 2012 with the intent to create an opportunity to work with a mangalsutra repair artisan. I first encountered these artisans, working streetside with their box of tricks in Alwar, Divali 2005. I was fascinated by their craft and the memory stayed with me. My search for someone willing to work on this idea took me to some interesting narrow streets in several cities, eventually I was rewarded. I spent a long afternoon with Anil Kumar Patel in Old Delhi watching as he wove his craft into my porcelain pieces. I have enjoyed wearing these pieces; the opportunity often arises to tell the tale their making and the bigger story of mangalsutra.” Sandra Bowkett
