Make it New Again: Models for Innovation in Traditional Craft

Day One – Thursday 22 November 2012
A symposium to consider the ongoing relevance of traditional craft and suggest new models for its sustainability
2pm – Welcome & Registration ( Small Inauguration)
3:00-5pm – Panel session ‘Futures for traditional craft’
The session will establish the context of the theme – Make it New Again and the objective that the symposium intends to achieve which is to lay comprehensive strategies (which includes viewpoints of a broad range of people) for robust sustainability of traditional crafts in the globalising, post industrial world. These will be laid in form of a formal Declaration as the culmination of the symposium.
6pm – Opening of Exhibitions
Day Two – Friday 23 November 2012
The second day of the symposium will have three, concurrent Roundtable deliberations addressing various issues, opportunities and contexts related to traditional crafts. The themes for these focused deliberations are:
- Better Future: To sustain traditional craft values in a changing world
- Better Society: How craft can make a more just society?
- Better World: How craft can benefit from transnational partnerships?
Programme Details
9am – Joint session covering all the broader picture and aims in which the roundtables are occurring
10am – Roundtables commence: individual presentations, case studies, models, etc.
1pm – Lunch
2pm – Afternoon sessions: small group work focusing on specific questions
4pm – Roundtable concludes: group conclusions shared within the roundtable
Day Three – Saturday 24 November 2012
Joint session
The third day will bring together the discussions from the roundtables and map a path ahead.
9-11am – Joint session in which results of roundtables and gathered and recommendations formulated
Workshop: Capacity building for online development in traditional craft
12-4pm – A workshop for artisans and NGOs to consider ways of using online services for developing profile, selling work and taking commissions.
